- Dr. Vivek Murthy, Oct 16, 2012
This tweet sparked a political controversy that nearly derailed the confirmation of Dr. Murthy as the Surgeon General. The National Rifle Association played “politics with guns” and attempted to bully legislators into denying his confirmation, claiming he would use the position as a platform for gun control.
Why shouldn’t he? If the 33,000 U.S. deaths and more than double that in injuries in 2013 attributable to firearms is not a serious public health issue, then what is? Read More...

New Short Film on Florida “Docs vs Glocks” Medical Gag Law
Documentary film director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films have turned their cameras toward the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. and the role gun-makers and the National Rifle Association. While exploring the issue Brave New Films talked to Florida physicians about the new state law that restricts physician discussions with patients about guns. They have released a 3-minute short that gives a useful overview of this law that is now being considered in other states.
"As a doctor, I put the safety and health of my patients first. Gun violence is one source of harm to patients and their communities and it’s a problem that may be prevented with a safety conversation in the exam room. As this film critically presents, that conversation is getting harder to have in some parts of the country, with legislative interference that will put obstacles in the way of care that patients deserve."
