In many states, legislative efforts have mounted to limit physicians' freedom to ask patients the basic safety screening question, "Do you keep a gun at home?"  Proponents of this intrusive regulation frame the issue as protecting the privacy rights of gun-owners.  We view it differently.  Screening questions about gun ownership and storage are fundamental to protecting patient health and safety, particularly for families with children.

As we work to address the public health crisis of gun violence, we must not be hamstrung by misguided legislative efforts that infringe upon both our free speech rights and the physician-patient relationship.

Add your name here and help make it clear that this censorship trend is alarming doctors from every state and every specialty.   We will keep you informed of our work going forward.
