Doctors, Guns & Medical Gag Laws

SpeakerLaura Cutilletta, Senior Staff Attorney
Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence

In 2011, Florida became the first state in the nation to enact an extreme new gun law – the Firearm Owners' Privacy Act – prohibiting doctors from asking their patients about gun ownership.  Despite the fact that the law was immediately challenged in court, several other states have attempted to enact similar policies to limit or block heath care providers from discussing the health risks of gun ownership with their patients. This presentation will focus on the ramifications of medical gag laws and the public health risks that come as extreme legislation spreads to other states and into federal legislation.
